It Is Dangerous For Mothers To Suck Mucus From Children’s Noses – Expert Warns
Mothers should desist from using their mouths to suck out mucus from the noses of their children or risk contracting infection, an Ontologist, Dr Titus Ibekwe, has advised.
Ibekwe, who is also the Chairman of the FCT Branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), gave the advice in an interview on in Abuja.
He stressed that sucking out the mucus from the child’s nose was not enough to make the child better.
The ontologist said what was needed to be done was to contact a doctor that would deal with the cause of such illness.
“It is not a healthy practice; especially the sucking with mouth, all the organisms that are causing this infection you are trying to take in; to ingest it, and that may even predispose the mother to an infection that she never bargained for.
“Best thing to do is to try as much as possible to clean the nose as it’s flowing; if it’s so bad there are special suction machine that could be used to suck out those mucus.
“It is the bi-product of the infection that the child is having that you are seeing flowing out in the form of mucus until the primary infection is tackled.’’
Ibekwe also said it was wrong to use cotton buds to remove mucus from the child’s nose as the wool on the plastic tube could dislodge and block air passage.
He said once that happened, the child could inhale the wool, which he explained, could go down to the air way and cause upper airway obstruction.
Ibekwe said the obstruction could lead to instant death.
“The skin that lines the nose is very fragile; it has a lot of blood vessels around it; you know about children having nose bleeding; so this can cause such and we discourage it.READ MORE

Imo State Traditional Rulers Moves A Motion To Introduce Uniform Bride Price - Too Many Unmarried Youth
Following what they have described as an increase in the number of unmarried youths in their community, the Traditional Parliament in Imo State is currently looking at a motion which seeks to harmonize the fee to be paid as bride price in all communities in the state.
The motion, which is entitled, “Motion on the Harmonization of the Marriage Institution in Imo”, was moved by Eze Duru Okwudor and Eze Obi II of Okwudor in Njaba Local Government Area alongside other traditional rulers, and the Traditional Parliament, in Owerri, has passed its first resolution on it.
According to Okwudor, high pride price and difficulties involved in the process of traditional marriage are some of the reasons for a change in the system. He also noted that the behaviour of some parents and community leaders on the issue of bride price during marriage was a source of worry to young adults. In his words, “What obtains in the marriage institution today leaves much to be desired. It is as if the parents want to sell their daughters. If this is allowed to continue it will translate into a big problem to our youths who want to marry.”

Pastor of a new generation church, Basil Princewill, was yesterday remanded at Kuje prisons by an Abuja High Court over alleged rape.
Princewill, who oversees the Mountain Movers Fire Ministries International, Nyanya, was alleged to have raped two 14-year-old members of his church under pretences of offering them prayers in July, 2011.
The pastor, according to charges filed by the FCT commissioner of police, allegedly procured abortion for one of the girls at the Fountain Health Clinic, Nyanya after telling doctors that he was her father.
After the leave to prefer the charges was granted by Justice Hussein Baba Yusuf, the pastor’s counsel Esther Uzoma applied for adjournment, arguing that the defence has not been served with the processes.READ MORE

The Federal Government on Wednesday said it accepted to hold dialogue with the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in order to arrest insecurity in the country as soon as possible.
“We have accepted dialogue as a way of bringing the (insecurity) situation to an end as quickly as possible. We have always called on those engaging in violence to stop because violence can’t solve any problem. So we welcome the decision to dialogue,” Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, told journalists in Abuja.
The Christian Association of Nigeria has, however, warned that the government should not hold dialogue with the sect on its own terms.
Though CAN said it was ready to support any step aimed at curbing the sect’s insurgency, it opposed the government-Boko Haram talks if they centred on the condition to Islamise of the country.
The sect’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, was reportedly quoted to have said in a video footage that President Goodluck Jonathan should convert to Islam or resign from office.
Jonathan in a statement by his spokesman, Reuben Abati, had rebuffed the condition, saying he had the legitimate mandate of the people, both Christians and Muslims, hence he could not resign. READ MORE

Your latest movie, Last Flight to Abuja is doing very well in the cinemas. How does that make you feel and why did you decide to be a part of the project?
I pick my projects very carefully, hopefully thinking that it might add something valuable to the time that we are in, movie-wise. I saw this as a very risky project, not only because of the story line but also because of the circumstances surrounding the project. Even at the time when the Dana Plane crash had not happened, it was based on a true story, the 2006 plane crash, so I thought it was something we could relate to. I felt it was an opportunity to lend my name to a project that would encourage people to tell stories that are not just fictional but stories that mean something to us.
As someone with international demands on her career and a Pilot husband, you must have flown on planes lots of times. Have you ever had a near tragic experience on a plane?
Luckily no, and I hope never to have such an experience in Jesus name. I remember my husband had something similar the year of the Sosoliso crash. He flew that day and he dropped the plane that our friend Captain Adebayo took away and unfortunately crashed. That is the closest shave I’ve had. I remember anytime there is a crash, people usually call or tweet or write me and say “Are you not scared?” and I’m like “We all fly, are you not scared too?”. People think that because my husband is a Pilot, I should be more scared than they are. We all fly everyday so it’s also an awakening call to the Aviation Industry because once that plane takes off, you really can’t change anything. So can we change it from the ground before we take off please!

But you’ve had beautiful memories on a plane. I remember seeing pictures from your wedding which you had on a plane several years ago. I thought that was romantic. When was that and why did you decide to have your wedding on a plane?
I got married in 1996 but we had the plane wedding in 2001. My husband and I are kinda like crazy people and we were thinking, “why just do a usual wedding, let’s do something really different”. We were thinking of a destination wedding and we thought about the logistics. But my husband just suggested, “what if we did it on a plane on a destination to somewhere”. People asked us if we were crazy. At every level we got to, they will just look at us and start laughing. But at the end of the day, it was a beautiful wedding. We flew from Lagos to Benin. We couldn’t get approval for anything farther. We actually wanted to have an international flight but the procedure was tough. 2012 WAEC Result now out
Rarenewsandschools.com is happy to announce to the general public and to all those who sat for 2012 WAEC that the May/June 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result released by the examination body, West African Examination Council (WAEC), on Friday August 10, has shown as increase of about 8percent from last year’s performance. Iyi Uwadiae, the head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, made this known during the formal announcement of the release of the results at the council’s head quarters in Lagos.
Uwadiae disclosed that out of the 1,672,224 candidates that sat for the examination, 649,156 representing 38.81percent obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics, which is an increase of about 8percent to the 30.91percent recorded in 2011.
According to the WAEC boss, there has been a consistent improvement in the performance of students in the examination since 2010 which he says “is an indication that investment in the education sector, particularly, under the transformation agenda of the present administration is beginning to yield dividends.”
He said out of the total number that sat for the examination, 1,545,004 candidates representing 91.10percent have their results fully released while 150,874 candidates, representing 8.90percent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and the schools in the course of registration and writing of the examination.
While disclosing that the Council was already working to correct the errors in order to fully release the results of the affected candidates, Uwadiae announced that the results of a total of 122,000 candidates, representing 6.70percent were being withheld in connection with cases of examination malpractices which are being investigated. This, he noted was a decline from last year’s record, noting that an improvement in performance translates to a decrease in malpractices.READ MORE

Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born in Ebonyi State. I became a Muslim in 1972, but left the eastern region in 1973 in search of education. I didn’t return to Igbo land on permanent basis until last year, 2011, but I am not staying in Abakaliki. Before I left this part of the country (north), I was the Provost of the Jama’atu College of Education, Kaduna.
How old were you when you became a Muslim?
I was 13 years old when I converted to Islam. Islam has its way of taking somebody. I am aware that many people converted to Islam after they had listened to preachings, but my own case was different, because I saw it in a dream. At a time when I was sleeping, I heard a loud noise coming from outside my room. When I went out to see what was happening, I saw many people lined up. When those people saw me, they asked me to come. When I joined them, we all bowed in sujud (prostration).
After some days, I heard the same voice again in a dream. So, I went out, but this time around what I saw was white people who told me that I should join them without any waste of time. We made the same sujud. On the third occasion, when I went out, I saw some people performing ablution and I joined them. That was where I learnt how to perform ablution, because the people taught me.
When I told two very close friends of mine, Ignatius queried whether I want to become a Muslim while Hassan accepted to be a Muslim with me because of what I saw in my dream.
After some months, we went to Nsukka to meet one Ibrahim Idah to learn about the religion. He is also an Igbo man who converted to Islam before us, but he was not all that knowledgeable. It was there that we met some Hausas. After asking us how we became Muslims, they administered the Kalamatu Shahada (testifying the oneness of Allah) for us.continue reading

Ogoniland Declares "Self-government" – Independence

Jubilations are continuing throughout Ogoniland after the Ogoni people in southern Nigeria, on, Thursday, 2nd
of August declared political autonomy. In a live broadcast on a newly established radio station: Voice of Ogoni, MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo vowed that:“By this declaration of political autonomy, we, the Ogoni people are determined to enforce the United Nations Declaration on Rights of Indigenous Peoples, without fear or retreat,” Diigbo said.
Diigbo affirmed that self-government within Nigeria will secure for the Ogoni people, their indigenous rights, enable them to meet their needs and interests and finally end internal colonialism.
Diigbo said self-government became urgent recognizing the need to arrive at a consensus to collectively review the disputed UNEP Ogoniland Oil Assessment report, because any dialogue must be with the genuinely elected representatives of the people expected to enforce indigenous rights without dictation.
In the broadcast, Diigbo further underscored the reason for the urgency of self-government for Ogoni: “Concerned that in the absence of a responsive government that the indigenous people of Ogoni will continue to suffer from historic injustices.”
Diigbo stated: “In order to make indigenous rights practicable in Ogoni, we have through a very transparent electoral college process, beginning with community by community elections, set up 272 village councils, while the village councils in turn elected representatives for 33 district councils and the district representatives went on to elect representatives to serve at the center as custodians of customs and traditions, otherwise called lawmakers.”
“The law makers in turn elected the executive arm of the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority (OCIA) with checks and balances inbuilt to ensure corruption-free, effective, efficient and answerable system of grassroots self-government instead of the old, corrupt and mismanaged local government system endured by the Ogoni for decades,” Diigbo explained.continue reading....

18 Year Old Girl Raped By Police Officer Storms Asaba Police Station With Baby
AN 18-year-old girl, Esther Odozi, who claimed she was raped by a retired police officer, caused a stir, at Asaba, when she stormed the Delta State Police Command, Asaba, with a nine- month old baby, demanding that the father should cater for the child.
Reporters learnt that she practically laid siege to the Police Headquarters, making it impossible for people to freely move in and out of the station, yesterday.

Four Best Ways To Stand Out In A Job Search
Are you frustrated because you've applied for dozens of jobs online and haven't heard back?
This is probably one of the most common frustrations of job seekers.
What can you do? Differentiate yourself from the hundreds of other job seekers.
Here are four ways to be that stand-out applicant:
1) Adapt your resume and cover letter. Take the time to adapt your resume to address the requirements of the job posting.
First look at the job posting and carefully analyze what they are looking for. Underline key skills sets, technical terms, and technology mentioned in the posting. Have you used these specific words in your summary of qualifications? Do you incorporate them in the accomplishment bullets under each job? Have you included them within your resume's technology section? Use the same underlined words and phrases in your cover letter and, most importantly, make sure you explain why you're interested in working for that company.
Your final step is to ask yourself this: can the employer clearly see (without having to think) how your experience relates to the job? This sounds like a lot of work, but once you get the hang of it, the process gets easier and faster.
And honestly, are any two job descriptions exactly the same? Why would you think you could use a single, unmodified version of your resume?
2) Take ownership. Stop waiting. Take action. If the jobs you applied for are truly of interest, then it is worth your time and effort to follow up with an email or phone call. Be sure you follow the instructions--for example, if the ad said, "No calls please," that means you shouldn't call. It is up to you (for your sanity) to find out the status of the job opening.
